When To Take Newborn Photos

Welcoming a new baby is one of life’s most incredible moments, and capturing those first memories is so truly so special. As a Nashville newborn photographer, I often get asked when to take newborn photos? There is no hardline answer to this as every birth experience is different, but if all goes smoothly, I recommend scheduling your newborn photo session within the first two weeks after birth. This timing is perfect for ensuring you get the best experience and the most precious photos of your little one. In this blog post, I’ll share more on why I love this timeframe for newborn photos and share tips for planning a newborn session that captures photos you’ll treasure forever!

When To Take Newborn Photos

The Sleepiest Little Thing

Newborns are typically the sleepiest within the first two weeks of life. During this time, babies tend to sleep deeply and can be gently posed without waking. Typically within those first few weeks there are three things a baby does — sleep, eat, and require diaper changes. So easy to work with!

Both Parents Are Home

Another advantage of scheduling newborn photos within the first two weeks is that dad is usually home from work. It’s a chance to document the love and joy that comes with welcoming a little one to the family, creating memories that will be cherished for a lifetime.

Newborns Change Too Fast

As a mom of three, I can say that newborns grow and change too quickly. Those sweet newborn features — the tiny fingers and toes, the soft little hair, the delicate eyelashes — change right before your eyes. Within the first month, babies can look remarkably different from those early days. Capturing these fleeting moments is a memory you want to keep because they pass by so quickly.

It’s Okay If They Don’t Sleep

While I love to photograph your little one asleep (you will never have sleepy photos again!), some newborns prefer to stay wide awake and that is absolutely okay! A sleepy baby might make parents feel more at ease, but an awake baby can result in some truly beautiful photos. Those wide-eyed gazes, tiny yawns, and curious looks are just as precious as the sleeping shots.

As a photographer, I am promise I can handle both scenarios. Whether your baby is peacefully sleeping or wide awake and alert, we can capture the beauty of those moments. Each expression and movement is part of your baby’s story, and we aim to document it all with care and creativity.

My Schedule is Flexible

Life with a newborn can be unpredictable, and sometimes plans need to be adjusted. I understand that circumstances such as an extended hospital stay, health concerns, or other unexpected events can arise. That’s why I offer flexibility in scheduling and rescheduling your session if needed.

Being a low-volume photographer allows me to provide personalized attention and accommodate changes without stress. If you find that you need to move your session date, rest assured that I will work with you to find a suitable time. The priority is to ensure that you have a positive experience and end up with beautiful photos, regardless of any adjustments that need to be made.

When To Take Newborn Photos

Deciding when to take newborn photos is an important step in preserving the early days of your baby’s life. Scheduling the session within the first two weeks ensures that we capture those precious moments when your baby is at their tiniest and sleepiest. It’s also the most ideal time for both parents as they are home enjoying their newborn days.

I wish it wasn’t true, but newborns grow and change so (too) fast. Those early days are fleeting, and capturing your little one is a beautiful way to hold on to those memories. I am here to help you capture it beautifully.
